Diabetes is a lifelong metabolic disorder that affects around 370 million adults worldwide. If you live with type 2 diabetes, you’ll appreciate the importance of looking after your health.
Type 2 Diabetes can result in other conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a silent disease with few or no symptoms. Fatty liver disease can progress into non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer.

- We are looking for volunteers to take part in clinical trials to better understand the condition and help find new treatments.
- Eligible participants will receive a free health check, Fibroscan and all study care will be provided at no cost to yourself.

Age
NASH risk increases with age.
BMI
People with a high BMI are at higher risk of developing NASH.
Pre-diabetes or Diabetes?
Having insulin resistance is linked to a higher risk of having NASH.
Blood Pressure
People with elevated blood pressure may be at risk of developing NASH.
Cholesterol
People with elevated cholesterol may be at risk of developing NASH.
Everything you need to know
It is a scan similar to an ultrasound used during pregnancy which will measure how elastic (or how stiff) your liver is. A healthy liver should be soft and elastic, and if your liver is stiff this is a sign that some damage has occurred.
How is it done?
It is a painless procedure which involves a probe being passed over the top right area of your stomach.
Your Fibroscan will be carried out at an outpatient clinic appointment.
What are the benefits?
The results of the scan can help your doctor find out about the level of damage that affects your liver, and decide what treatment you might need.
It is helpful for measuring the degree of liver damage in people with:
- Viral hepatitis B and C
- Alcoholic liver disease

- What are the risks?
There are no risks involved. It is painless and not invasive (meaning it’s not carried out inside your body and does not break the skin).
