World Heart Day.

World Heart Day.

The annual awareness day, which takes place on 29th September every year, was launched in 2000 by the World Heart Federation and is a chance for people across the globe to take part in the world’s biggest intervention against cardiovascular disease (CVD) and encourages us all to reduce our cardiovascular risk.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels[i]. It is the world’s number one killer. Each year, it is responsible for 17.3 million premature deaths, and by 2030 this is expected to rise to 23 million[ii].

One of the risk factors for having CVD is high blood cholesterol. If you’ve been diagnosed with high cholesterol, you’ll be advised to make changes to your diet and increase your level of exercise and in some cases you may be advised to take cholesterol-lowering medication.

Synexus, the world’s largest multinational company dedicated to the successful recruitment and running of clinical studies, has many years experience in conducting a wide range of clinical studies including assessing treatments for high cholesterol. Each year, thousands of patients take part in clinical studies at Synexus’ Dedicated Clinical Research Centres across the world, including South Africa.

Synexus is currently running two high cholesterol clinical studies and is looking for patients who:

  • Are aged over 18
  • Are currently taking a statin for high cholesterol or altered lipid results
  • Have previously had a cardiac event (heart attack, stroke, angina, coronary artery bypass, angiogram or had a stent fitted)
  • Or have diabetes, kidney disease, circulatory problems, currently smoke, either currently have or have a history high blood pressure, family history of heart disease or high cholesterol.

There is no obligation to participate and if you do decide to take part, your GP will be kept fully informed of your involvement. Throughout the study, Synexus will monitor participant’s health carefully using standard medical tests and procedures. Assessment can be stopped at any time if you or your doctor have concerns, or you can leave the study at any time if you simply change your mind. There will be no charge for the study treatment or any study related care. Patients accepted onto the study will receive reimbursement for reasonable travel expenses (Synexus can also help with travel arrangements if required).

Participating in a Synexus clinical study means patients receive increased medical attention and may benefit from medications that aren’t always available to other sufferers of their condition, while making a positive contribution to the health of future generations.
